How Do I Lower Calcium Hardness In A Swimming Pool?

If you have a swimming pool and live in the Texas and Oklahoma area you’re going to deal with high calcium and total dissolved solid (TDS) levels in your swimming pool. Over the years we’ve learned that high calcium levels are also extremely common in many other places in the United States and world. As water evaporates in a swimming pool, calcium and other hardness minerals remain in solution and start to stain the tile, liner of the swimming pool and equipment. If you have decorative tile, fountains or other water features this can make looking at them extremely frustrating because the staining gets worse and worse and it can make your backyard paradise look like an eyesore. In the swimming pool industry it’s recommended to have your calcium levels between 200-400 parts per million (ppm). In parts of Oklahoma and Texas, the water coming out of the tap is 400ppm and above. When calcium levels get high, we recommend recycling your swimming pool using the “Puripool Process” in our mobile filtration system. It conserves 85% of the water in the swimming pool, gives you much better water than a drain and refill and prevents damage to your swimming pool when you drain it.

Last week we discussed the water quality issue in Oklahoma because we were about to head out to a swimming pool to recycle their swimming pool water again. This is the second time we’ve worked with this customer and want to share the results with you.

Recently, we were called out to a 21,000 gallon residential swimming pool because they know the importance of having their water changed every two years. Since the TDS and calcium hardness coming out of their tap is too high they opt to use us to conserve the water, get a better end product and reduce the risk of damaging their swimming pool by not draining it.

Results From 2 Years Ago

Total Dissolved Solids – 9000ppm

Calcium Hardness – 800ppm

After filtering the water we were able to lower these to 2400ppm TDS and 200ppm calcium hardness. The water coming out of their tap is 2500ppm TDS and 300ppm calcium hardness.

This past week we rolled up to the swimming pool again with the following results

Total Dissolved Solids – 3500ppm

Calcium Hardness – 600ppm

After filtering this swimming pool again we were able to lower calcium hardness to 250ppm and the TDS to 860ppm. Once again we were able to conserve 85% of the water in the swimming pool and give our customer much better water than tap. The ending chemistry is perfect when dealing with a swimming pool. The residents lost no time with their swimming pool and we also lowered cyanuric acid too! If you should have any questions in regards to our Puripool Process please give us a call 1-817-481-7665.

Public Swimming Pool Safety

In a recent article titled, “Many Public Swimming Pools and Hot Tubs Overwhelmingly Fail Health Checks, thousands of pools, hot tubs, and splash parks are shut down every year due to health and safety violations, according to a new report published Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Nearly 80 percent of public pools and water playgrounds had at least one violation during inspection.” The research was performed in nearly 50,000 swimming pools in Arizona, California, Florida, New York and Texas where findings showed that 80% of the swimming pools had at least one violation. The biggest culprits were found in kiddie pools and water playgrounds and the findings were mainly Cryptosporidium. Cryptosporidium is a parasite that can live in water even with adequate amounts of chorine. Due to the fact that kids and even adults urinate in swimming pools, as well as, even the most unfortunate could happen which is a child could defecate in the swimming pool. Symptoms of cryptosporidium are diarrhea, stomach cramps, upset stomach and slight fever.

This is becoming a major issue and most individuals who swim in commercial pools aren’t concerned because the water is clear and blue. At Weber Pools, we offer a pool service that specializes in working with commercial properties. We work well with numerous management companies of some of the largest luxury developments in the DFW area. Weber Pools is familiar with the property management process, and we carry the current pool service licenses and insurances required by most commercial facilities. In addition, we are also aware of all the current and ever-changing health department swimming pool requirements and processes. Our biggest concern is you and to make sure you are swimming in a pool that is safe for not only the adults but kids too. These type of outbreaks increase around the time of swim season, which is now. Unfortunately, unless you ask to see the health report you are always taking a risk.

As for commercial properties that fail inspections, the biggest question is what to do now? The typical solution is to drain and refill a swimming pool because as stated above even with adequate amounts of chlorine these waterborne diseases won’t go away. This means downtime for the commercial property, as well as, the risk of damaging the surface of the swimming pool. This is why Weber Pools is your complete swimming pool company. As stated above we are on top of the health department changes but we can also help if there is a waterborne disease. We offer a mobile filtration service that comes to the property and recycles the swimming pool without draining it. This process will remove Cryptosporidium, will allow swimmers to swim while the process is done and most importantly we will make sure the water is in safe shape to swim. Oklahoma Water Quality

Water quality has been in the news quite a bit lately and it’s becoming more and more of an issue. Most people are familiar with the issues in Flint, Michigan and most recently San Diego came into the picture because of their drought conditions. Ultimately water quality can refer to a variety of different things but for this blog post we want to focus in on swimming pools and how the poor water quality in Oklahoma can cause major issues with them. If you own a swimming pool most people are familiar with total dissolved solids (TDS) and calcium hardness. These are two of the most prominent factors as to why changing out the water in your swimming pool is recommended. According to Google’s knowledge graph, “Dissolved solids refer to any minerals, salts, metals, cations or anions dissolved in water. Total dissolved solids (TDS) comprise inorganic salts (principally calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, bicarbonates, chlorides, and sulfates) and some small amounts of organic matter that are dissolved in water. Whereas, calcium hardness is of an issue because the fill water in Oklahoma is loaded with limestone and other hardness minerals.

If you walk into any pool store or talk to any pool professional they will warn you that your water should be changed when the TDS and calcium hardness get too high in your swimming pool. Some pool stores will even tell you to drain your swimming pool water when the TDS rises above 2,500 parts per million (ppm). The interesting phenomenon here is the water coming out of the tap in Oklahoma is 2,500 ppm! So what does that mean you ask? It means that since our water is already hard a typical drain and refill isn’t your smartest decision. The reason why calcium hardness and total dissolved solids levels rise in your swimming pool is because when water evaporates, the hardness minerals remain in solution. As the temperature rises and evaporation increases, the levels get to the point where managing your swimming pool becomes problematic and it also causes calcium staining on the tile, liner and equipment of the pool.

So with all that said, if draining a swimming pool isn’t the solution, what is? Weber Pools offers mobile filtration using the Puripool Process which comes to your home or commercial property and recycles the swimming pool water using Reverse Osmosis (RO) membranes. The process conserves 85% of the water in the swimming pool, lowers calcium hardness, lowers TDS, it never exposes the liner of the swimming pool and our guarantee is to give you much better water than what you would get out of the tap. Typically, the service can be performed in less than a day and you can swim in the pool the entire time which means NO DOWNTIME! If you are interested in learning more about how this service can help you, call us today! Also, stay tuned as in next week’s blog we will be highlighting a swimming that we will be recycling in Oklahoma this week.
